Hakata Koma is said to have originated at Touchoji Temple in Hakata, Fukuoka.
About 480 years ago, Ichitaro, a 10-year-old boy in Hakata, began to play the fighting game of kenka Koma (fighting spinning top), which was one of his favorite games, using a string to manipulate the Koma very skillfully. From this children's game called "Koma", he gradually developed it into an acrobatic performance and established acrobatics spinning top.He became very famous in Hakata, and then moved to Kyoto, where he performed at the Shijo Kawara area and became the talk of the town.
It is written in the literature of the time that "the momentum was so great that a nearby Kabuki hut collapsed.
The Tokugawa family allowed him to perform under the crest of the hollyhock and the crest of the chrysanthemum and paulownia.
In the late Edo period (1603-1867), the company expanded overseas, performing at the World Exposition in Paris, France, and in England, there is a record of an audience with Queen Elizabeth II and an audience with the President of the United States.
In 1958, Chikushi-syuraku I was designated as Fukuoka Prefecture's first intangible cultural property, and the 20th head of the family, Chikushi-syuraku III, has now taken over the art of juggling and the production of Koma.
